History
Garrison
Corner Cemetery Association is a
non-profit, tax exempt organization
incorporated in 1991 under the laws
of Ohio. The purpose of the Garrison
Corner Cemetery Association is as
follows:
- To
preserve and restore the Garrison
Cemetery, located on Shawnee Trace
Road, Blanchester, Ohio.
- To
publish historically accurate
information about the cemetery,
the Garrison Corner Community
and School and the people that
lived in this area.
- To
establish a Perpetual Care Fund
for the maintenance of the Garrison
Cemetery.
Originally,
the plot of land for the Garrison
Cemetery and the Garrison Corner
School was donated by Benjamin (Garritson)
Garrison, oldest son of Lemuel Garrison,
Sr. Lemuel Garrison Sr., was a revolutionary
War soldier from Glouster County,
N.J. and is listed in the Official
Register of the Officers and Men
of New Jersey in the Revolutionary
War.
A
deed, identified for the first time,
a cemetery exception of .78 acres
on a deed from Wesley and Mary L.
Garrison to J.M. Gustin. Wesley
was Benjamin’s son. This exception
is shown on all subsequent deeds
for this property.
The
Rudes (also spelled Rhude at this
time) came to the Garrison Corner
Community when Susannah came to
Clinton County, Ohio with her son
Peter Rude, first of the Rude line
in Marion Township, Ohio. Susannah’s
first husband Felix Rude was killed
by Indians at Fort Ancient, Ohio
while serving with General Anthony
Wayne’s Army. Susannah’s second
husband was Asa Hutchinson whom
she married on July 20, 1816. Susannah
died on June 5, 1860, at the age
of 84...remarkable since the average
life span of residents at the Garrison
Cemetery was 31 years of age. Research
has identified Susannah Pelser Rude
Hutchinson as the senior resident
of the Garrison Cemetery, while
Mary Evans Martin was identified
as the earliest resident having
been buried at Garrison Cemetery
in 1837. Peter Rude’s daughter,
Susannah, married Peter Garrison
son of Benjamin Garrison.
Other
family names represented at Garrison
Cemetery not mentioned above are:
Knicely, Hudson, Gustin, Farquer,
Holly, Nicely, Andrews, Wayson,
Laymon, Morlan, Ridgeway and Williamson.
